How to choose your first AI tool

Goal

Start with a real task you need to finish this week rather than asking which tool is strongest, then compare two candidates with the same input.

A task that can be completed in 30–60 minutes, such as finding sources, changing a small piece of code, or organizing meeting notes.
Two tools designed for the same type of task.
A simple record containing completion time, review time, whether the result was directly usable, and any limitations you encountered.

Describe the task and its acceptance result in one sentence, for example: “Find three official sources and state the claim supported by each one.”
Prepare exactly the same input for both tools; do not quietly add context during the second trial.
Complete the task with each tool and record the time to the first usable result.
Open sources, run code, or compare original text, then record review and rework time.
Choose based on total time, result quality, data boundaries, and usage limitations rather than only the speed of the first output.

You will have a short record that explains why you selected a tool and clarifies the tasks where that choice does and does not apply.

If both results are poor, check whether the task is too broad and add clearer input and acceptance criteria.
If the tools are hard to compare, measure retrieval, generation, and review separately.
Before using company or personal sensitive data, confirm the tool's data handling and your team's usage policy.
